About VEFS Foundation

From Seed to Soil: Reviving Tamil Heritage, Nurturing Sustainable Futures

Our Story

The story of VEFS Foundation began with R. Vetrimaran's transformative journey under the guidance of Nammalvar Ayya, the legendary pioneer of ecological agriculture in Tamil Nadu. Having witnessed the devastating effects of chemical farming on soil health, farmer livelihoods, and traditional knowledge systems, Vetrimaran recognized an urgent need for change. At Valluvam Pannai in Kulathupatti, Nilakottai, he established the Valluvam Ecological Farming and Social welfare foundation with a clear purpose: to revive the wisdom of our ancestors while building a sustainable future. The foundation was born from a simple yet powerful question—"Do we truly know what good food is?"—and a determination to help farmers and communities rediscover the answer through organic practices rooted in Tamil Nadu's rich agricultural heritage.

What started as training sessions for local farmers has grown into a comprehensive movement touching every aspect of sustainable agriculture. Drawing on over a decade of hands-on experience, particularly in Zero Budget Five Layer Farming models, the foundation developed programs that empower farmers from production to marketing—breaking their dependence on middlemen and chemical inputs. A weekly organic market now connects farmers directly with consumers, ensuring fair returns and access to truly organic produce. The foundation expanded its reach through partnerships with schools and colleges, conducting eco-education programs, trekking expeditions, and competitions that have inspired a new generation to connect with nature. Having trained over 200 farmers to transition from chemical-based to natural farming, VEFS has become a trusted name in Tamil Nadu's organic farming community.

Today, VEFS Foundation works at the intersection of ecological conservation, farmer empowerment, and traditional knowledge preservation. The landmark Pond Restoration and Biodiversity Project at Senghataan Kulam, Batlagundu, exemplifies our holistic approach—reviving traditional water systems while creating biodiversity-rich habitats. Our research into Sangha Ilakiya Maranghal (trees mentioned in ancient Tamil Sangam literature) represents a unique effort to document and preserve indigenous species that shaped our ancestors' lives. Looking ahead, we envision establishing a permanent eco-learning center, restoring three major ponds in the region, and developing community biodiversity gardens featuring these heritage trees. Our ultimate goal is a Tamil Nadu where farmers thrive on their own terms, consumers access poison-free food, and the ecological wisdom of our ancestors flourishes once again.

Meet Our Founder

R. Vetrimaran - VEFS Founder & President

R. Vetrimaran (வெற்றிமாறன் .இரா)

Founder & President, VEFS Foundation

R. Vetrimaran is a prominent organic farming expert and environmental mentor whose professional journey has been deeply shaped by the wisdom and guidance of Nammalvar Ayya, a pioneer in ecological agriculture and social activism. Starting as a dedicated student of Nammalvar Ayya, Vetrimaran absorbed the principles of poison-free food production, sustainable farming practices, and traditional knowledge systems that would become the foundation of his life's work.

Vetrimaran's career trajectory demonstrates progressive commitment to ecological farming. He progressed from being a student to serving as a training coordinator at Vanagham Nammalvar Foundation, where he was responsible for organizing and conducting hands-on training programs in ecological farming, seed saving, and traditional medicine. With more than a decade of hands-on experience in organic farming, he specializes in Zero Budget Five Layer Farming models and biodiversity improvement. His innovative soil management techniques have enhanced soil organic carbon levels and made farmlands more resilient to droughts and floods. Throughout his career, he has trained over 200 farmers across Tamil Nadu to transition from chemical-based farming to natural and organic practices.

In his role as a trustee at Vanagham Nammalvar Foundation, Vetrimaran gained invaluable experience in decision-making, resource management, and fostering partnerships for broader impact. This experience culminated in the founding of VEFS Foundation, where he serves as Founder and President. As a mentor and "friendly guru," he conducts field demonstrations, youth training programs, and maintains active media outreach through platforms like Pasumai Vikatan. His philosophy is deeply rooted in traditional knowledge, natural soil fertility management, and biodiversity conservation—principles learned directly from Nammalvar Ayya's teachings.

Vetrimaran's remarkable contributions to organic farming and biodiversity have earned him both national and international recognition. He is driven by a vision to restore ecological balance and create a sustainable food system that empowers farmers and consumers alike. His commitment extends to preserving indigenous tree species mentioned in ancient Tamil literature (Sangha Ilakiya Maranghal) and establishing community-based biodiversity gardens. Through VEFS, he continues Dr. Nammalvar's legacy in ecological farming and community welfare, with ambitious plans to establish permanent eco-learning centers and collaborate with educational institutions to promote traditional ecological knowledge across Tamil Nadu and beyond.

"Guided by the teachings of Nammalvar Ayya, we promote farming rooted in traditional knowledge, natural soil fertility management, and biodiversity conservation. Farming is not just about production—it's about restoring our connection to nature and ensuring food that is truly poison-free and nourishing for our communities."
